Thoughts of Zemirot Database contributor: My own personal thoughts are "the stone" the builders despised can also refer to Torah (the numerical positions of each of the letters letters in the words EVEN "stone" and TORAH in the aleph beis both add to 53). In addition, Yom in Hebrew can mean "day" and it can also mean "time period". Everyone goes through different periods of life, ups and downs and since it is all for the ultimate good and since it all comes from Hashem, we should rejoice and be happy.

In this practice I find and express my strength, my will, my effort and desire when I chant "Ozi." When I chant "v’zimrat Yah," I open and surrender to the God-song and let it be sung through me. Then in the last phrase, "Vayahi li lishuah," I balance those two aspects of my practice.

Before Hatikvah was chosen for the purpose, Shir Hama'alot was a serious contender as Israel's national anthem. "When the Lord brought us out of captivity, we were like people in a dream!"

The first tune in the list below, recorded by Joel Nothman, was composed by Cantor Pinkhas Minkowski (1859-1924) and was made famous by Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt (1882-1933). As far as can be determined, the tune is in the public domain.

The tune recorded by Emily Barton is by Debbie Friedman. The Zemirot Database has obtained licenses for this use from the Deborah Lynn Friedman Trust.

This is a melody I learned in summer camp 60 years ago.
