Translation:

This composition praises the Hidden Torah. Specifically, its light began to spread clearly with the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the Tana of Mishnayos. Therefore, the pizmon declares how Rabbi Shimon was greater than all his colleagues for receiving and teaching what he did. It also declares the immense positive qualities that must be had in order to receive and disseminate this material, and how Rabbi Shimon was victorious over adversity.

Ten stanzas with a refrain. Every stanza and the refrain begins with 'bar Yohai...', 'Son of Yochai...' Beginning letters of the stanzas form Shimon Lavi, Shimon the Lion.

This pizmon is recited on Shabbos night by some communities of Sepharadim. Some sing it during the meal, while others recite it in advance of the meal, along with passages from the Holy Zohar. On the Shabbos, the Jewish soul finds rest, and clarity in the study of the Torah. Therefore, the hidden Torah is also clearer on the Shabbos. Therefore, this pizmon, even though it does not directly address the Shabbos, is appropriate for the Shabbos.

The entire pizmon is full of veiled, cryptic references to material in the Kabbalah, the Torah that is only transmitted and not publicly expounded. That is why this 'translation' has been only an explanation. For those who are familiar, the ten stanzas refer to the ten s'firot (there may be inaccuracies in this list):

I. Malchut (King David)
II. Yesod (Yosef the Righteous)
III. Chesed (Avraham Avinu)
IV. Tiferet (Yaakov Avinu)
V. G'vurah (Yitzchak Avinu)
VI. Netzah (Moshe Rebbeinu)
VII. Binah
VIII. Chochmah
IX. Keter
X. Hod (Aharon the Kohen)

Notice how Hod is last. Lag B'Omer, the yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon, is hod sh'b'hod in the sefirat haomer. There is a strong association with Rabbi Shimon and those who know the hidden Torah, and the Kohen Gadol. The Kohen Gadol regularly went into the Holy of Holies. He wore the Choshen, with the Urim V'Tumim - the scrolls inside it, written by Moshe Rabbeinu himself, containing the secret seventy-two letter Name of Hashem. Hence, the Kohen Gadol is representative of one who holds secrets in the knowledge of Hashem's Providence.

Information:

Song in praise of the holy Tanna Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Sefardim and Breslover Hassidim sing it every Shabbos. Most communities sing in on Lag B'Omer and the Shabbos before Lag B'Omer.
